How can you be sure a translation is reliable?


The art of translating is not to be confused with producing a word-for-word 'mirror image' of the original text. For a translation to be trustworthy, the translator must be well-versed in both languages, and above all, be familiar with the subject matter. In this case, a translation depends not only on the translator's personal skill but also on constant research and meticulous proofreading until the project is done. Here's one of our recent translation projects involving specific terms from the shipping industry.

Original text:

The Owners agree to let and the Charterers agree to hire the vessel from the time of delivery for about 360 days WOG via safe port(s)/ berth(s) always afloat, always accessible, always within Institute Warranty Limits.

Translated text:

O ARMADOR DISPONENTE concorda em dar o navio em afretamento por tempo e o AFRETADOR concorda em tomar o navio em afretamento por tempo, a partir da data da entrega do referido navio, pelo prazo de 360 dias WOG, por todo ou parte do tempo coberto por este contrato, para operar em porto (s) e berço (s) seguro (s), sempre flutuando, sempre acessível, sempre nos Limites de Garantias do Instituto.

Please take note of some of the striking features of this translation:

  • The number of words in Portuguese is almost double.
  • The English adverb 'about' had to be translated in a way that captured the exact idea in the original text, not merely as a synonym, which involved research and consulting shipping experts.
  • The jargon used in the translated text is a perfect match for the jargon used in the documents and relevant literature. Note that a simple word like 'owner' was translated into Portuguese by using a phrase that could hardly be found in the available dictionaries. In shipping parlance, the customary meaning of the word is not simply 'possuidor' or 'proprietário'. Again, currently available bilingual dictionaries don't always offer practical, accurate, and reliable connotations like that.

Now, take a look at the same text translated by an English teacher that occasionally also works as a free-lance translator:

Take note of some of the striking features of this translation:

  • There was absolutely no concern about the reliability of the original. And this very sense of reliability doesn't mean simply translating words or stringing together synonyms. It's exactly the opposite of what most people think. Providing an accurate translation means rewriting the text in the target language in such a way that the reader believes it had been written by a native writer.
  • The typical jargon used by professionals in the sea freight industry was completely disregarded. The translator restricted himself to using such common terms such as 'shipper', 'rent', 'lease', 'owner', etc.

Also note that reading the translated text is garbled by the lack of accuracy and commitment to the client's interests and needs. Without a thorough orthographic and technical proofreading, this job is nothing more than a word-for-word translation, the kind produced by electronic translation programs, instead of a reliable professional translation. As a result, clients run the risk of suffering considerable losses by accepting a translation project that has no added value.

The reliability and accuracy of a translation project depend entirely on this type of revision. Furthermore, one revision alone is not always enough for the project to be considered finished.

The translation market – A new approach

Given that, unfortunately, translators are still considered a non-regulated profession in our country, one of Tragbex's goals is to put in time and effort to make lawmakers aware of the need to pass a law regulating the profession of translator in Brazil.

Surprisingly, almost anyone can be called a translator in Brazil (a practice that is also common the world over) as no formal qualification is required from anyone willing to become a translator.

Tragbex also advocates that a minimum five-year documented translation experience be necessary for anyone to be certified as a translator.

Tragbex understands that, in the case of translation companies, trustworthiness cannot be associated with a web site, letter-head stationery and e-mails. As for individual free-lance translators, no one can be deemed a reliable translator after taking a six-month or a two-year course, or just because he or she knows how to communicate in a given second language.

The certification of highly qualified professional translators shall also be part of Tragbex's endeavor. To that end, we have been working on a five-year training program for the certification of professional translators.

This is not going to be a money-raising program, but a serious effort to provide potential translators with the required practice they need to be awarded the status of a professional translator.
